Islam Makhachev( 23-1) gets what he wants and makes the first defense of his featherweight crown against the feather-weight champion. Charles Oliveira( 2022) is the only top-ranked fighter he has defeated, so it is obvious that his light run did not earn him this super fight. The Brazilian, who was on one of the best streaks we had seen in the UFC, was easily defeated by his sheer prowess. In the first round, he submitted the submission record holder after inflicting pain on his feet.
Alexander Volkanovski( 25- 1) approaches the feared 155er with assurance and is even happier to do so at home. He is currently seated with pride on the UFC's most impressive featherweight streak. Before dethroning Max Holloway in 2019, he defeated Chad Mendes( 2018) and Jose Aldo( 2017) and twice more in 2020 and 2022, resulting in victories over Brian Ortega( 2021) and the Korean Zombie( 2022).
Since he first entered the octagon, Volkanovski has been disproving people's beliefs, and there is a strong argument to be made for him as the greatest featherweight of all time. Makhachev is a different animal than any he has ever encountered, despite his merits in this super fight.
He is a bigger and more powerful man in addition to being the best grappler in the lightweight division. Makhachev has a clear advantage in this situation, which is accentuated by his elite technique, and Volkanovski is used to giving up much size but not much power.
The Australian will actually have an inch on Makhachev and boast a clear speed and striking advantage. But when he is lying on his back, none of that will matter. Makhachev should be able to take down Volkanovski with ease, but he will need to put in a lot of effort to do so. He has a remarkable ability to spring back to his feet and is slick.
But we don't think that will be sufficient. The best chance for Volkanovski is to wish Makhachev the ego to endure the first two rounds and to gass in order to finish stronger and pinch three rounds, which he is undoubtedly capable of with his cardio.
Volkanovski will start by chopping the lead right leg and popping his jab while constantly bouncing and moving out of the way. Makhachev can exchange kicks and cause damage, which will make his takedowns even more difficult to defend.
The likelihood that Volkanovski will find a submission increases the longer the lightweight champion can keep him down. Brian Ortega, who has some of the best jiu-jitsu on the entire roster, made two deep submission attempts, which the Aussie managed to defend. However, the Russian has the ability to grind him down throughout the fight, where a submission will eventually open itself up.
